Essentials To Keep Your Baby Warm This Winter
If you need help keeping your baby warm during the winter, you are in the right place! As the mother of a ten-month-old in New York City, thriving in the winter is important.
Getting through winter in New York City with a baby might not be the easiest, but the appropriate layers and stroller accessories help. I purchased everything our baby would need ahead of time, so once it got chilly, we were ready.

Winter Must-Haves for Your Baby & Toddler
Stroller Accessories
I am starting with two stroller accessories that ward off rain, snow, and wind, making the biggest impact when trying to protect your baby.
1. Footmuff for the Stroller
In New York City it starts to get cold in October/November, so I ordered a stroller footmuff the first week of October.
Footmuffs are awesome, and essential for keeping your baby warm during winter. They easily attach to the stroller, are easy to use, and most importantly: prevent heat loss.
We have the UPPAbaby Vista stroller, and I chose the brand’s ultra-plush footmuff that matches the color of our stroller. I love that it is long and grows with the baby!
- It is machine washable
- Soft and cozy fleece lining
- Full coverage neck warmer and adjustable hood
- Compatible with UPPAbaby Vista, Cruz, Minu, and Ridge
- Comfort rating of -5˚F/-20˚C, while wearing only one layer of clothing
- Suitable for children from 3 months to 33 inches
If you need stroller recommendations, we’ve been using our Vista V2 Stroller for almost a year and love it! It’s a popular stroller in New York City because it is robust, has a big basket, and withstands heavy use.
If you have a different stroller, here are four universal footmuff options!

2. Rain and Wind Cover for the Stroller
I impulsively purchased this stroller rain cover to protect our baby when it rains, but once I started seeing other moms in New York City use it as protection from wind I thought that was brilliant and decided to do the same.
It’s an inexpensive shield that could save your little one from catching a cold, making it an absolute must-have – in my opinion.

I always keep a big fluffy blanket in the stroller’s basket to put on top of her or around her in the stroller for extra warmth.

3. Warm Layers
When it comes to your infant, dressing in layers is very helpful. I ordered most of my baby’s warm layers from H&M Kids and Gap Kids!
Snowsuits are useful if you will be spending a lot of time outside. Because we spend most of our time indoors (in restaurants, coffee shops, or museums) I prefer to dress our baby with layers that I can easily remove once we are inside where there are heaters.

4. Winter Booties
Your baby will need something to keep their feet warm. When I looked for shoes for Ella, my top priority was to find booties that covered the ankle area.
These cozy fleece booties have been a fantastic find! I love them because they are easy to put on and they fasten in the front with a velcro closure to keep them from falling off. They come in several colors, and I highly recommend sizing up. The booties have non-skid soles, but Ella is not even crawling yet!

5. Winter Hat
Your baby will need coverage for the head, neck, and ears. Ella is ten months now, and I have avoided beanies because they are easy to pull off, and do not protect the neck.
I prefer, and love, these balaclavas that are soft on the inside, cover the ears and neck, and our baby does not feel bothered by them (that’s a plus!).
I purchased both of these below:
