I recently flew to Florida to surprise my niece on her birthday and stayed for about a week in Bal Harbour.

Before moving to New York, I lived right on the ocean, and I sure miss living so close to the water! So it’s always great being back in the Sunshine State, catching up with family and friends, and dining at my favorite spots.

In today’s article, I am sharing my suggestions of wonderful things to see and do in Miami, in case you find yourself planning a getaway to Miami!

1. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Step back in time and explore the grandeur of what used to be James Deering’s winter home in the heart of Coral Gables.

Vizcaya is a stunning mansion that was built between 1914 and 1916 and features European design traditions showing that America can compete with Europe, not only financially, but also culturally.

2. Sunset Dinner at Mandarin Oriental

If you love Peruvian ceviche, make sure to grab a reservation at La Mar by Gastón Acurio, a restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental in Brickell that overlooks Biscayne Bay.

I’ve been coming here since it opened in 2013, and it is one of my favorite restaurants in Miami.

3. Brunch at Faena Miami Beach

I love an early breakfast or brunch at Veranda at the Faena Hotel. If you are staying in the South Beach area, this spot is on 32nd and Collins Avenue.

After brunch, check out Damien Hirst’s impressive gold sculpture of a mammoth that stands three meters tall, is plated in 24-karat gold, and is inside a glass vitrine.

4. Miami Beach Lifeguard Towers

There are over thirty lifeguard towers along the coastline of Miami Beach from South Pointe Park up to 87th Street.

These brightly colored lifeguard towers were commissioned to be redesigned vibrantly to uplift the spirits of the town after Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

These cute and vibrant lifeguard towers are definitely worth checking out, plus they make a great backdrop for your photos.

5. Champagne Bar at the Four Seasons at The Surf Club

I lived next door to this hotel for many years, and it was one of my favorite spots for dinner with my girlfriends. I love coming to the Champagne Bar whenever I am in town.

The restaurants at the Four Seasons in Surfside have changed names over the years, but they are always beautifully designed.

Lunch at The Biltmore Hotel is always a treat if you are in South Florida. This palatial resort is a National Historic Landmark with a 95-year history rooted in luxury and elegance. It’s always been one of my favorite hotels in Miami!

Many will agree that visiting this 1926 Mediterranean-style historic hotel is one of Miami’s top things to do. Its stunning architecture, elegance, and tropical landscaping are one of a kind. See more of my suggestions for things to see when you visit Miami here.

We stayed here with my family for Mother’s Day many years ago, my sister celebrated her bridal shower here (at the Culinary Academy), and I’ve had dinner with girlfriends at Fontana more times than I can count.

St. Augustine Itinerary – Day 1

Take the Old Town Trolley Tour

I am a big fan of the Trolley Tour. Trolley tours are available in only 7 cities in the United States, and St. Augustine is one of them.

What I love the most about the trolley is that it becomes your taxi, and you can Hop-on and Hop-off all day long. I’ve taken the trolley in various cities and always find it incredibly practical and enjoyable.

If you don’t have many days to explore St. Augustine or are unable to walk for hours, the trolley will help you see the best highlights of the city.

I recommend jumping on the trolley as soon as it opens at 9:00 AM. The last trolley departs at 4:30 PM, and it is worth noting that a complimentary hotel shuttle service is included in your ticket.

Visit the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the 8th stop in the Old Town Trolley Tour and the first one that I, and half of the trolley, decided to hop off at.

The cathedral is home to the nation’s first Catholic parish. After multiple attempts, it was built in 1797, then rebuilt after a fire in 1887.

The facade is a combination of Spanish mission and Neoclassical styles, and the interior is adorned with murals and stained glass windows.

There is so much to see in the beautiful details, here is the photo I took of the cathedral’s unique interior.

On September 8, 1565, Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales celebrated the first mass as he proclaimed the land in the: “Nombre de Dios” (“Name of God”). He was the chaplain who accompanied St. Augustine’s founder and the Spanish explorers.

It is at this location that the Great Cross, which rises 208 feet, was erected in 1965 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of Christianity in this land.

The 208’ bronze cross is the tallest cross in the Western Hemisphere. A gift from the Vatican, it was capped at that height to avoid the installation of a mandatory aircraft warning light.

These first Spanish settlers brought with them a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and established the Holy Virgin’s first sanctuary in the U.S. on the grounds. They built a chapel and dedicated it to “Nuestra Señora de La Leche” (“Our Lady of Milk & Safe Delivery”).

The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche, America’s first Marian shrine, is located on the mission grounds. Pilgrims come from all parts of the world to pray for Our Lady of La Leche’s powerful intercession and light a candle in the historic chapel. I love visiting churches when I travel and took time to explore the grounds.

Entrance to the grounds is available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Parking is free.

From outside the shrine, I hopped back on the trolley, and it continued its way to its final stops of the tour: The Old Senator Tree and the Fountain of Youth.

It wasn’t until the trolley dropped us off at stop #1 that I realized that I had parked my car at stop #3. Thankfully, a complimentary shuttle service is included in your ticket!

St. Augustine Itinerary – Day 2

Explore Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is one of the most visited sites and the focal point of historic St. Augustine. I suggest you start your day at this site.

The 17th-century Spanish stone fortress was built over 300 years ago by the Spanish to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route.

Many forts preceded the Castillo, however, this one made of coquina was impenetrable to enemy attack and was fire resistant.

Construction began in 1672 and lasted 23 years, until 1695. I loved walking around the fort during sunset time, I got to enjoy views of the inlet and the most beautiful pink sky.

Paid parking is available right next to it, that’s where I parked, but this lot has a limited number of spots. There’s also a parking garage a few blocks away.

Check out historic St. George Street

Just 5 minutes from Castillo de San Marcos is historic St. George Street.

After stopping for lunch at Casa Reina (I’ll get to it in a bit), we made our way to St. George Street, a pedestrian-only street lined with bars, restaurants, and shops.

This street represents the center of the town and the site of many of the reconstructed Spanish colonial buildings in St. Augustine. We grabbed coffee and tea at a cute little store and strolled up and down St. George Street while visiting local shops.

Pass through the Old City Gates

While you explore St. George Street, be sure to check out the Old City Gates and the Oldest Wooden School House.

The Old City Gates, one of St. Augustine’s most recognizable landmarks, is at the north end of St. George Street. Don’t forget to take a photo in front of this historical site!

The Oldest School House is a small wooden structure located at 14 St. George Street. It was built over 200 years ago, with red cedar and cypress, and put together with wooden pegs and handmade nails.

Take a Tour of Flagler College

Flagler College is perhaps my favorite building in all of St. Augustine.

The college is named for industrialist and railroad magnate Henry Flagler who built it in 1888 as a hotel. The property is a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was one of the most exclusive resorts of its day.

I recommend taking a guided tour of this gorgeous property. On the tour, you will see the courtyard, the grand lobby, the rotunda, the 68-foot domed ceiling supported by eight oak caryatids hand carved with robed women, the dining room with 79 Louis Comfort Tiffany Stained Glass windows, and the Flagler Room with handcrafted Austrian crystal chandeliers.

Flagler College was the first of Flagler’s series of luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast, others include the neighboring Hotel Alcazar (now, Lightner Museum).

Flagler College – Fun Facts:

Architects John Carrére and Thomas Hastings were young men right out of college when they designed Hotel Ponce de León (now, Flagler College) and Hotel Alcazar (now, Lightner Museum). They are noted most for the New York Public Library and The House and Senate Office Buildings adjacent to the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Louis C. Tiffany is credited with the building’s interior design including the stained glass & mosaics.
Hotel Ponce de León was one of the nation’s first electrified buildings. The Edison Electric Company powered the building with steam heat and 4,000 electric lights.
During the Depression, the federal government-sponsored art programs at the property were attended by Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
The U.S. Coast Guard commandeered the property during World War II for use as a training center.
Mark Twain, President Theodore Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, and Babe Didrikson stayed at the hotel.
Henry Flagler’s great-nephew sold the property to a group from Mount Ida College to establish a women’s college, known today as Flagler College.

The Lightner Museum

Across from Flagler College, you will find the impressive Lightner Museum.

The Lightner Museum occupies the former Hotel Alcazar, a resort also commissioned by railroad magnate Henry Flagler.

The Hotel Alcazar opened in 1889, it was slightly less expensive than Hotel Ponce de León but had lots of amenities for guest enjoyment, like saunas, a casino, archery ranges, and the world’s largest swimming pool at the time.

In 1947, Otto Lightner purchased the building to house his art collection. The museum showcases Lightner’s collection of art and artifacts from the 19th century.

If you want to sip on a margarita while enjoying the flavors of Mexican cuisine, this place is a must. It is located in St. Augustine’s historic downtown area, on the bay front at the foot of the Bridge of Lions.

I ordered the house margarita and the ‘nachos reina style’ – the best nachos I’ve ever had. This restaurant has lots of seating areas, both indoors and outdoors.

I suggest you go during the day to enjoy the outstanding view (see my images above & below).

CAP’S ON THE WATER

Cap’s On The Water is a waterfront spot 6 miles from St. Augustine’s historic downtown. This restaurant is a hidden gem that only locals know about (and was recommended by my friend’s husband). Be sure to arrive before sunset, and enjoy dinner from the wooden deck!

The truffle parmesan fries and the seared catch that came with mashed potatoes & roasted carrots were delicious! If you are looking for fresh local seafood and coastal cuisine, go here.

When was St. Augustine founded?

The city of St. Augustine was founded on September 8, 1565, by a Spanish soldier named Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. He named the settlement “San Agustín,” as his ships bearing settlers, troops, and supplies from Spain had first sighted land in Florida eleven days earlier on August 28, the feast day of St. Augustine.

When is the best time to visit St. Augustine?

I recommend visiting between October and April. We went in January and it was not busy, plus the weather was very pleasant.

The rainiest months are usually June, July, August, and September.

What is St. Augustine known for?

St. Augustine is well known for the fort, Castillo de San Marcos, which was built by the Spanish settlers to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, as well as Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth, containing healing water that enhances your appearance.

St. Augustine is also known for Henry Flagler, a railroad tycoon that built luxury resorts along Florida’s east coast, and for being the oldest continuously settled city in the United States.

How far is St. Augustine?

The trip from Miami to St. Augustine is around 311 miles (500 km) via Florida’s Turnpike and I-95. The drive usually takes 5 hours, with normal driving conditions.

If you are visiting St. Augustine from Orlando, the trip is a little over 100 miles (165 km). St. Augustine’s location makes it a perfect day trip or weekend destination.

Which airport is best for flying to St. Augustine?

Northeast Florida Regional Airport is a private and commercial aviation facility that is 5 miles from St. Augustine, a 10 minute drive.

Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is 51 miles from St. Augustine, a 1 hour drive.

Orlando International Airport is 121 miles from St. Augustine, a 2+ hour drive.

How much is the shuttle from Jacksonville to St. Augustine?

The drive from Downtown Jacksonville to Downtown St. Augustine is 41 miles (66 km). There are several shuttle companies that offer direct shuttle services from Jacksonville to St. Augustine, and the cost varies from $70-100 depending on the company that you hire.

St. Augustine Itinerary – Day 3

If you are looking for additional days of activities during your stay in St. Augustine, a trip to a nearby town or city is always a brilliant idea. Below are some of the best options from St. Augustine.

Day Trips from St. Augustine:

Ponte Vedra Beach, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Atlantic Beach, and Amelia Island, are all within 25-70 miles of St. Augustine.

Another popular option is to drive from St. Augustine to Savannah, Georgia. The drive is 176 miles (283 km) and takes 3 hours with normal driving conditions. Savannah is a charming Southern city with horse-drawn carriages, antebellum architecture, and a historic district filled with cobblestoned squares. See my article on 5 Hours in Savannah here!

A final note!

The Faena Hotel in Miami

Faena Hotel in Miami is a modern luxury hotel in Miami’s mid-beach neighborhood, about 10 blocks north of South Beach.

I was familiar with Faena Hotel in Buenos Aires, so when it was announced that Faena Group would open a hotel in Miami Beach, I knew it would be impeccably designed. Alan Faena and I have a thing in common – we were born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Walking into any Faena Hotel is quite an experience, especially the one located in Miami Beach. After you walk through the expansive great hall lined with gold-leafed columns, and you open the doors out into the terrace, you are greeted by a 10-foot-high skeleton that is sure to take your breath away!

One of the most eye-catching pieces that I’ve ever seen outdoors is a Damien Hirst sculpture titled “Gone But Not Forgotten.” The enormous woolly mammoth skeleton is on display in the garden of the Faena Hotel. This breathtaking sculpture is dipped in 24-karat-gold and stands inside a temperature-controlled glass case overlooking the ocean.

The expansive beach area is adorned with the most adorable red and white lounges.

Where To Eat & Drink

The Living Room at Faena

Fancy a night of glitz and glamour? Head over to The Living Room at the Faena, one of the coolest gathering areas inside the hotel, and enjoy sensational live music! Together with my family, we’ve celebrated anniversaries, birthdays, and numerous special occasions at this spot over the years. The bar and lounge area are stunning, the service is exceptional and the food is exquisite. The minute you enter the room, you will be captivated by the vibrant furniture, lush décor, red cushions, and delightful chandelier.

Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann

If you like steakhouses, you must try Los Fuegos at Faena. Francis Mallmann is a James Beard Award-winning chef, and his specialty is authentic South American (Argentine) dinning, including the traditional “asado.” Chef Mallmann is one of the world’s top reigning grill masters. Are you familiar with him?

The menu at Los Fuegos includes wood-oven empanadas (love!), skirt steak or prime rib-eye served with chimichurri sauce, and handmade potato gnocchi (a staple growing up in Buenos Aires!). Vegetarian options are available as well.

Veranda Restaurant at Faena

Another option at the Faena is Veranda, an elegant breakfast option overlooking the hotel’s pool. This restaurant is open seven days a week and closes daily at 11:00 AM, so be sure to arrive early! I had been here before, but my husband had not, so we decided to have brunch here on Saturday morning. I love the casual vibes at Veranda, it is the perfect spot to start your weekend!

We both enjoyed our brunch at this intimate outdoor eatery. While he ordered the huevos rancheros, I opted for the acaí bowl (healthy and delicious!). Every breakfast should be this nice!

The city of Jacksonville had always been at the top of my list of cities to visit in Florida! Jacksonville has 22 miles of beaches, beautiful historic neighborhoods, parks, museums, outstanding golf courses and fantastic local restaurants.

We drove down to Miami to visit my family during the holidays, and on our way back to New York we enjoyed an amazing week in the city of Jacksonville!

I was invited by Jacksonville Florida Tourism to explore the city and share my favorite activities. We visited during the third week of January, and the weather was amazing. It was breezy at night, and we had plenty of sunshine during the day.

Where To Stay in Atlantic Beach FL

There are so many different experiences to have in Jacksonville. This time around we were looking to explore the fun things to do in town, relax by the ocean, and enjoy long walks on the beach. One Ocean Resort & Spa in Atlantic Beach was perfect for doing all of that.

Located about 25 miles south of the Georgia state line and 350 miles north of Miami, Jacksonville was the first stop we made after leaving Miami. We were escaping the snow, so spending a few more days by the beach was exactly what we were looking for.

One Ocean Resort & Spa is a luxury resort that features guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling views of the Atlantic Ocean. We stayed in one of their Deluxe King Rooms, which offered a breathtaking view of the ocean. Upon arriving, we opened the windows, and my husband noticed that we could hear the waves crashing from inside the room, he was so impressed! The guest rooms feature deluxe beds custom-designed for the hotel, and our bed was one of the most comfortable beds we’ve ever slept on. Southern Grounds & Co. – Quickly became one of our favorite breakfast spots in Jacksonville! Their gluten-free blueberry muffins are so delicious! I loved their cute indoor area, if you are ever in town, check it out!

Whit’s Frozen Custard – This is one of the most delicious cold desserts! Whit’s Frozen Custard is located across the street from The One Ocean Resort so it was easy for us to grab a frozen custard every single day! The flavors that I ordered the most were: mint, banana & raspberry, and the last one was my favorite.

The Local on Neptune Beach – The Local is a fun place with a cool atmosphere and live music every night! We grabbed dinner here one day and had such a great time. Their fresh lemonade is one of the best I’ve ever had.

Flying Iguana Taqueria & Tequila Bar – Tacos & margaritas? Yes, please! This restaurant has an entire menu that is gluten free, how amazing is that?! My husband and I both love Mexican food so we had to try it out!

Azurea at the One Ocean Resort – We enjoyed one of the best fine dining experiences here! Azurea is a beautiful restaurant located inside the One Ocean Resort that offers a seafood-centric American menu. We loved the mussels as the appetizer, the seabass as the main course, and the brownie for dessert! The seabass for dinner is a must-have! It was probably the best fish I have ever eaten.

Looking to enjoy the beauty of Islamorada Florida? Then you’re in the right place because in today’s blog post, I will share where we stayed, where we ate, and a list of hotels you can stay at while visiting Islamorada.

Islamorada is one of six villages in The Florida Keys.

What is Islamorada known for?

Islamorada is a beautiful destination in Florida that is known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World. You will find peaceful scenic views, amazing food, coral reefs, and an easygoing atmosphere in a tropical setting.

Why Visit Islamorada, Florida?

Staying in Islamorada is always a good idea! For us, January, February, and March are the best months to escape New York’s snow and enjoy Florida’s sandy beaches.

We drove down to Florida to spend time with my family during the holidays, as well as for sunshine, palm trees, and bliss. My husband had never been to the Florida Keys, so we thought it’d be the perfect time to visit because of its proximity to Miami. I must add that Amara Cay Resort welcomes pets, which is important for us traveling with our dogs.

Where to Stay in Islamorada

Amara Cay Resort has 110 rooms, each with a private balcony. The resort has its own heated pool and private beach for guests to enjoy. Both my husband and I loved the hammocks under the palm trees, thatched huts, and stunning ocean views.

Waking up with those sunrises was quite dreamy! If you are looking for an ocean-front property with a laid-back atmosphere, then Amara Cay Resort is the place for you.

Another reason to stay at Amara Cay Resort is the amenities the property has to offer. You can enjoy the bicycles, kayaks, paddleboards and board games on their outdoor lawn, or take a dip in their heated pool before heading to the Tiki Bar for a piña colada (I couldn’t get enough of them!).

During our recent stay at Amara Cay Resort, we stayed in an oceanfront suite on the top floor – it had a living room, a balcony, and a spacious bedroom with a King bed. The views from the rooms were spectacular, and staying there felt like a home away from home.

Reel Burger & Tiki Bar

Breezy poolside spot for classic American cuisine and tropical cocktails against a backdrop of swaying palm trees. Their grilled chicken Caesar salad and key lime pie were both amazing!

Ciao Hound Italian Kitchen & Bar

At Ciao Hound I enjoyed some of the best appetizers I’ve ever had in my life! I highly recommend the baked spinach artichoke fonduta and their prosciutto-wrapped shrimp. For dinner, my husband and I both picked the mahi-mahi, and it was excellent.

Are 1-2 days in Islamorada worth it?

Yes! Seeing Islamorada in 1-2 days is easy because it is a small village. Make a stop in Islamorada on your way to or from Key West since you will drive through it each time. Islamorada is the perfect destination for those looking to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere with tropical views, and fun outdoor activities.

How far is Islamorada?

The trip from Miami to Islamorada is around 90 miles (145 km) via I-95 and US-1. The drive usually takes 2.5 hours, with normal driving conditions.

If you are making a stop in Islamorada after visiting Key West, the trip is 80 miles (129 km). Those are the best ways to get to Islamorada.

Which airport is best for Islamorada?

Miami International Airport (MIA) is 79 miles (127 km) from Islamorada, a 2-hour drive.

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Airport (FTL) is 108 miles (174 km) from Islamorada, a 2+ hour drive.

Orlando International Airport is 311 miles (500 km) from Islamorada, a 5-hour drive.

A final note!

If you are trying to decide whether to stay in Key West or Islamorada, the answer depends on two things: the amount of driving you are comfortable doing, and whether you prefer a relaxing atmosphere or a touristy spot. Those were the two factors that made us pick Islamorada over Key West. We were seeking a peaceful atmosphere that was a relatively easy drive from Miami.

The trip from Miami to Key West is around 170 miles and the drive takes 4+ hours.

The Delano Hotel is located on the corner of Collins Avenue and 17th Street in Miami Beach.

This art-deco-style hotel was designed by architect Robert Swartburg and was built in 1947 by Rob and Rose Schwartz. The 1994 renovations were designed by Philippe Starck, a French architect and designer.The hotel was named after US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Hello babes! I am writing this from my super cozy couch! One of the best feelings is coming home from a long day (several long days in my case), taking a quick hot shower, putting on my comfiest cotton pajamas, preparing soup, and catching up on things 🙂

I have been running on low battery lately, my days always start around 6 AM, and end at midnight or later. They typically involve lots of driving as well! Yesterday I drove a total of 100 miles (mostly work related), but I also drove one of my pups to the ophthalmologist which takes about an hour each way.

At night, I was invited by Universal Pictures to see a special screening of the movie Truth or Dare with another blogger. Does anybody reading this like scary movies?? I usually stay away from them, but I enjoyed the 40% of this one where I did not have my eyes closed! haha!! It comes out in theaters on Friday the 13th!!! If you go see it, let me know if you were brave enough to keep your eyes open 100% of the time.

Happy Monday, everyone! Yesterday I took my mom to lunch at the beautiful Beach Club located inside the Hard Rock Hollywood. She was super excited to go, and I have been a Hard Rock fan for decades. I’ve got shirts, and tank-tops from Hard Rock Cafes across the world!

We ate by the lagoon-style pool, and stayed cool with their refreshingly cool cocktails. My favorite was the Mango Fusion Mojito – you must get it when you go!

LOOKING FOR THE BEST MIAMI RESTAURANTS WITH A VIEW?

You’re in the right place because I lived in Miami Beach until recently. During my time there, I enjoyed dining at the best Miami restaurants with a view.

Are you planning to visit South Florida soon? Whether you are considering a vacation in sunny Miami, coming to town for a business trip, or visiting friends and family – I recommend making a reservation at any of these before arriving! All of the restaurants below offer breathtaking water views. Continue reading to see a round-up of my favorite restaurants with a view – in no particular order.

AMARA AT PARAISO, Downtown Miami

Miami’s newest waterfront restaurant overlooking Biscayne Bay!

Dining Style: Upscale Latin fare.

What to Expect: Lots of bold Latin American flavors including yuca cheese puffs, short rib empanadas, crab tostada, grilled red snapper, surf & turf parrillada, tajin spiced fries, and yellowfin tuna tiradito.

The location of this restaurant is truly spectacular, I was happy to get to enjoy the views from Amara during my latest trip to Miami. We were staying at an Airbnb that we rented at the Paraiso buildings, and the restaurant was only 250 feet away. Next time you are in the city, go enjoy a cocktail at this restaurant by James Beard award-winning Chef Michael Schwartz.

Note: Make a reservation in advance. This is a great spot for happy hour!

SUGAR, Brickell

Lush rooftop bar on the 40th floor of EAST Miami!

Dining Style: Asian-inspired cocktails & tapas.

What to Expect: Spectacular views and chic Hong Kong cocktail vibes that include lychee blossom, chili parador, mezcal aviation, sunset samba, and sesame sling.

My husband and I have been to Sugar with other couples. The views of Brickell and Downtown Miami are breathtaking, so the best time to go is during sunset (before it gets too crowded).

Note: This is a fun place for a night out with friends.

LA MAR, by Gaston Acurio at Mandarin Oriental, Brickell

Dining Style: Fine Dining. Peruvian & Fusion Fare.

What To Expect: Here you can explore the authentic flavors of Peruvian gastronomy such as ceviches, tiraditos, anticuchos, and traditional pisco sours with an outstanding view of the bay.

If you ever want to impress someone during dinner time, bring them here right before sunset!!! I’ve eaten at this restaurant during golden hour, and I can say that it was breathtaking. La Mar is a chic waterfront restaurant that features the acclaimed cuisine of Chef Gaston Acurio. I am a big fan of traditional Peruvian food, so I always enjoy the menu here, especially the ceviche salad, the arroz con mariscos (rice with seafood), and pisco punch. Ah! I just remembered that one of my colleagues was proposed to right here – on the corridor by the water!

ZUMA, Downtown Miami

Miami’s minimalist Japanese hot spot by the Miami River!

Dining Style: Casual Elegant. Japanese Fusion.

What To Expect: They offer a huge selection of Japanese bites, sushi & sashimi, sea bass, salmon, and delicious desserts like the yuzu and key lime meringue pie with raspberry umeboshi!!! – all with a beautiful presentation.

This is the restaurant that I’ve eaten at the most for three reasons: (1) I used to work a block away from it (I miss this!), (2) modern Japanese cuisine is one of my favorites, and (3) the ambiance is super enjoyable. Zume is located in the heart of Downtown Miami, only 4 blocks from Bayside Marketplace, and approximately 8 blocks from the American Airlines Arena.

Note: Make a reservation in advance, and be patient while they bring you your food (totally worth it), they are always busy because they are just that good!

SMITH & WOLLENSKY, South Pointe, Miami Beach

A breathtaking waterfront view of Miami!

Dining Style: Upscale. Steak House Chic.

What To Expect: This is one of America’s premier steakhouses that offers USDA Prime dry-aged steaks and seafood in a clubby, power-dining setting. You can enjoy rib eye carpaccio, roasted bone marrow, or tuna tartare as a starter. Or you could try any of their classic dry-aged cuts, steaks, filets, and chops. Their delicious side dishes include truffled or lobster mac & cheese (so good!!). Make sure that you ask for the Chef-Inspired Features as well.

The location is outstanding, and the waterfront patio is gorgeous for outdoor dining in Miami! You can find young crowds enjoying their award-winning wine list on Fridays after work. I have attended so many happy hours here, and have tried almost all of their bar bites (order Wollensky’s Sliders and hand-cut french fries!).

Note: Bring a good camera! Make memories!

JUVIA, South Beach

This is one of the best rooftop hot spots in Miami!

Dining Style: Ultra-Modern Elegance. Euro-Asian Fusion.

What To Expect: They offer an extensive menu that includes salads, appetizers, spicy tuna crispy rice, Chilean seabass, broiled branzino, king crab risotto, prawns linguine pasta (love it!), a variety of options from the binchotan charcoal grill or the cold bar. Their specialty cocktails are some of the best that I’ve had, I usually order the purple juvia, the juvia lemonade, or the lovely pear – I recommend that you try at least one of these!

I have lost count of the number of times that I have come to Juvia, and it is usually with a big group of friends on Saturday nights. The world-class modern decor is quite attractive, the panoramic South Beach views are unique, and its location is easy to access. I love that both their indoor and outdoor options are awesome to sit at and that this restaurant gets filled with a nice crowd every single time!

Note: After shopping on Lincoln Road, come up for a drink, to enjoy the view, or to have dinner.

** Juvia is located in the penthouse of the famed 1111 Lincoln Road parking garage, Miami, Florida 33139.

AREA 31, Downtown Miami

Incredible rooftop view of Downtown Miami!

Dining Style: Upscale outdoor eating.

What To Expect: Lots of seafood, such as oysters, ahi tuna ceviche, jumbo crab cake, seared scallops, bouillabaisse, swordfish, and salmon. On their lunch menu, you can find a salmon burger (so good!), and many sandwiches. They also offer a delicious brunch menu that includes steak & eggs, egg white omelet, chilaquiles, smoked salmon, tuna poke tacos, key lime tart, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate crunch, and so much more.

Happy Hours at Area 31 are fantastic, and they take place Monday to Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Fridays from 5 pm to Midnight, they have what is called “Chase the Clock,” drinks are priced by the hour, $5 at 5 pm, $6 at 6 pm, $7 at 7 pm and so on!

Note: It is best to arrive at 5 pm so that you enjoy the view AND their $5 drinks special!!

THE RUSTY PELICAN, Key Biscayne

This is one of the most romantic date-night spots in Miami!

Dining style: Modern American Cuisine.

What to expect: Start with short rib empanadas, crab cakes, and burrata & tomato salad, continue with their spicy tuna roll, day boat pistachio scallops, or Atlantic salmon, and finish with a delicious key lime pie. At this restaurant, you will enjoy one of the best views of the Downtown Miami skyline reflecting on Biscayne Bay’s Intracoastal.

Every time I go to The Rusty Pelican, I have a delightful time! I highly recommend arriving well before dinner time, in order to secure a good table, catch the sunset and enjoy Happy Hour prices before it gets too crowded!

Note: Happy Hour is hosted Monday-Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
